【USA】Gasshuku Report – JKA Oregon Shiba Dojo
The JKA Oregon Shiba Dojo Gasshuku took place from August 9th to 10th, 2024, in Beaverton, Oregon. We were honored to host Guest Instructor Taniyama Takuya Shihan from JKAHQ, who provided invaluable training that focused on Shime and the correct positioning of the knees and feet in stances and movement. The event also included a kata session and a tournament workshop, with a special focus on preparing our JKA World Championships competitors from Team USA and Canada.
On the second day, participants applied the Shime drills they had learned, this time with partners, emphasizing proper maai and timing. Saturday’s activities included a workshop on JKA tournament rules for both participants and judges. Taniyama Sensei oversaw our open tournament, following Shobu Ippon JKA kumite rules and JKA kata rules. This was a particularly valuable experience for many participants, as JKA tournaments are a rare opportunity in the Pacific Northwest.
Feedback from participants highlighted the positive impact of the event:
- “We made new friends and reconnected with old ones. Visiting students from Washington returned to their dojo with excitement, asking, ‘When is the next one?'”
- “The highlight for me was being able to judge and gain more experience as a Head Judge. It was a well-organized Gasshuku.”
- “It was great to see JKA members collaborating and supporting each other, regardless of affiliation. The location was easy to access.”
- “We were pleased that JKA BC Canada was invited. We really enjoyed the Gasshuku and look forward to future training opportunities together.”
- “Taniyama Sensei’s key points on tournament rules and processes were very helpful for our competitors. We don’t have access to JKA tournaments in our area, so many students are accustomed to WKF judges and rules.”
JKA Oregon Shiba Dojo extends our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended our inaugural Gasshuku and tournament in Oregon with Taniyama Shihan. Special appreciation goes to JKA Los Angeles—Harada Yoshiaki Sensei and his team, Arizona JKA—Jackie Martinez Sensei, and all the JKA licensed judges for their support in making this event a success. We are deeply grateful to Taniyama Sensei for his exceptional instruction.
