【PHILIPPINES】Shotokamp (Gasshuku) with Naka & Iwabuchi Sensei / 2nd Traditional Karate Open – (An Event Tribute to Sasaki & Takahashi Sensei) June 14, 15, & 16, 2024.

This three day event was held in the Capital of the Philippines in the City of Marikina, and it was participated by over 5 countries (Japan, Mongolia, USA, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and the Philippines being the host country). This event attracted more than 430 competitors and over 1,000 spectators.

On the first day, 14th of June, the event was the Shotokamp/Gasshuku. The Shotokamp is a 2 Day Gasshuku, composed of four seminars – mornings and afternoons. The first day was attended by brown and black belts, 3rd Kyu and up. The first and second days were taught by the well respected Tatsuya Naka Sensei. Naka Sensei taught a very special class on mind-body connection, body mechanics, and the difference between sports and budo karate.

On the second day, the third and the fourth seminar was attended by colored belts from 8th Kyu to 4th Kyu. Here Naka Sensei split the class with Iwabuchi Sensei, the Chief Instructor of the JKA-NKK Philippines. Both instructors took part in instructing all of the participants in the Gasshuku. It was an amazing sight to see.

On the last day, 16th of June, was the 2nd Traditional Karate Open. This tournament is dedicated to the Founding fathers of JKA in the Philippines, Shihan Kunio Sasaki and Shihan Masanori Takahashi. This event hosted over 5 countries (Japan, Mongolia, USA, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and the Philippines being the host country) and attracted more than 430 competitors and over 1,000 spectators. It was a huge success! Mr. Masayuki Iwabuchi and Mr. Tatsuya Naka were also there to watch and observe the amazing display of Budo Karate in the Philippines.

Special thanks to Naka Tatsuya Sensei for giving such amazing instructions. It was an overall success. All of the participants enjoyed every lesson in the class. Most of the participants are already looking forward to more future events. We noticed that the love for Karate, all competitors have exhibited a blend of strength, discipline and dedication that set them apart. We look forward to a future where Karate will start mirroring the structure and heartfelt commendations for passion pursued with vigor by our karatekas.
